When I first watched Kwame’s video about Akufo-Addo, I was disappointed, felt it was below the belt

In an Official Facebook Post published on 3 October 2026, political commentator Patrick Donyina shared his reaction to the controversy surrounding remarks made by social commentator Julius Kwame Anthony regarding former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. According to Donyina, his initial impression of the viral comments was one of disappointment, as he believed the statements crossed the line and ventured into unnecessarily personal territory.

The comments by Julius Kwame Anthony had generated significant discussion on social media, with many people criticizing the tone and content of the remarks. Like several others who encountered snippets of the video circulating online, Donyina admitted that his first reaction was based on the shorter clips that quickly spread across various platform.

However, he explained that after taking time to watch the entire video and understand the full context in which the statement was made, his perspective changed considerably.

According to Donyina, the circulating excerpts did not fully capture the point Julius Kwame Anthony was attempting to make. He noted that the social commentator was referencing claims contained in a foreign diplomatic report rather than presenting a personal allegation as an established fact.

Quoting what he described as Julius Anthony’s complete statement, Donyina wrote:

Following his review of the video, Donyina said he went further to examine the source being referenced. According to him, the remarks were connected to a diplomatic cable reportedly dated October 2008 involving discussions attributed to Dr. Emmanuel Aning, who at the time was serving as Director of Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC).

Donyina stated that the diplomatic document allegedly recorded comments concerning Akufo-Addo’s past, which Julius Kwame Anthony cited as part of his argument. Based on that context, he argued that Anthony’s remarks were rooted in a referenced source rather than being a completely fabricated claim.

Even so, Donyina maintained that factual references and political wisdom are not always the same thing. While he acknowledged that Julius Anthony appeared to be drawing from an existing document, he questioned the necessity of reviving such a subject in contemporary political discourse.

In his view, political debates should focus primarily on issues of governance, policy, leadership, and national development rather than historical allegations that remain controversial and divisive. He suggested that even if a point can be defended on factual grounds, public figures must still exercise discretion regarding when and how such matters are raised.

The controversy highlights a recurring challenge within modern political communication. In the age of social media, short clips and isolated comments often circulate faster than the full context in which statements were made. As a result, public reaction can sometimes be shaped by partial information before audiences have an opportunity to examine the complete discussion.

Political observers note that Ghana’s political landscape continues to be heavily influenced by historical narratives, personal reputations, and debates over past administrations. Consequently, comments relating to current or former leaders frequently generate intense discussion among supporters and opponents alike.

Donyina’s intervention has attracted attention because it attempts to separate two issues: the factual basis of a statement and the wisdom of making it. While he concluded that Julius Kwame Anthony may not have been entirely wrong based on the source he referenced, he also indicated that raising the matter at this particular moment may have been unnecessary.

The Facebook post has since generated mixed reactions, with some users agreeing that context is important before judging controversial statements, while others maintain that certain issues should remain outside political debate altogether. Regardless of the differing opinions, the discussion has once again highlighted the importance of context, fact-checking, and responsible communication in Ghana’s increasingly polarized political environment.
