“Two Big Mistake” Hlungwani Exposes Controversial Soweto Derby Decisions That Shoc-ked PSL Fans
Hlungwani Exposes Two Controversial Derby Decisions As Pirates Beat Chiefs 2-1
A contentious evaluation of the officiating in the Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs has been delivered by former Premier Soccer League (PSL) official Victor Hlungwani. Hlungwani asserts that two crucial decisions made by the match officials were wrong.
Orlando Pirates prevailed 2-1 over their fierce rivals at FNB Stadium in the most recent meeting of the Soweto giants, producing yet another unforgettable encounter. On the other hand, supporters are still arguing about the officials’ performance after several controversial refereeing decisions kept the outcome in the spotlight.
Due to the absence of a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) to review the events of the match, “The Principal,” a former referee by the name of Hlungwani, has reviewed the tape and provided an explanation for his belief that the officials erred.
The ex-referee bases his evaluation on two big incidents involving goals scored by Pirates players Yanela Mbuthuma and Oswin Appollis, claiming that the decisions should have been reversed.
When Yanela Mbuthuma scored the opening goal for the Pirates in the 24th minute, the first big controversy ensued.
The striker’s effort was fortunate to beat Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen after taking a deflection off defender Thabo Moloisane. This gave the Buccaneers a significant advantage.
Replays revealed that Mbuthuma might have been in an offside position when the pass was played, which became a big talking point in the buildup to the goal.
Hlungwani detailed his reasons for disapproving of the goal after reviewing the tape and drawing an offside line.
Mbuthuma scores a goal right here. We will gain clarity once we draw the line. According to him, Mbuthuma’s leg is in danger.
He went on to say that Mbuthuma was in an offside position because Chiefs defender Inacio Miguel’s leg was in the way.
“Mbuthuma is in an offside position because (Inacio) Miguel’s leg is outside the line,” Hlungwani added.
He knew it was a close call, but he still thought the Pirates forward had gotten an unfair advantage.
“The situation is quite tight, but it’s easy to see that Miguel’s leg is outside the line and Mbuthuma’s leg is inside the line.”
He then handed down his decision, in which he adamantly argued that the first goal ought to have been disallowed.
Mbuthuma is playing offside. It was not meant for this goal to have stood. Given the circumstances, this is wrong. The decision should never have been made, he said.
In a match where every call mattered, his analysis has added fuel to the fire of controversy over the refereeing, especially since the goal gave the Pirates a major advantage.
Curiously, Hlungwani also pointed out another big officiating call, this one going against Orlando Pirates.
In the second half, Oswin Appollis scored a goal, but it was disallowed because the assistant referee had raised the offside flag.
Hlungwani claimed Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika had intentionally played Appollis onside after reviewing the incident.
The ex-PSL official stated that the Chiefs defender’s positioning allowed the Pirates attacker to be in a legal position at the time the ball was played.
