Tricycle rider jailed 14 years for defiling 3-year-old girl in Wa

A 29-year-old tricycle rider has been sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment with hard labour after being found guilty of defiling a three-year-old girl at Tiegber in the Wa Municipality of the Upper West Region.

The convict, identified as Naah Mashood, was arrested on February 24, 2026, by the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Upper West Regional Police Command following a complaint lodged by the child’s mother.

According to the police, Mashood had been engaged by the victim’s parent to transport the girl to and from school. However, on February 23, 2026, he allegedly lured the child to an isolated location and sexually assaulted her inside his tricycle, locally known as a Cambuu.

Following investigations, he was first arraigned before the Wa District Magistrate Court before the case proceeded to the Wa High Court for trial.

After hearing the case, the court found Mashood guilty of defilement. He was sentenced on October 30, 2026, by Justice Osei-Wusu to 14 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.

The Upper West Regional Police Command has commended the officers who investigated and prosecuted the case, as well as others whose contributions helped secure the conviction.

The Command has also urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant and take measures to protect children from abuse. It encouraged members of the public to report suspected cases of child abuse and defilement to the nearest police station or DOVVSU office.

It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children and ensuring that perpetrators of sexual offences are brought to justice.
