Tipper Trucks Halt Operations in Greater Accra as Drivers Cry Foul Over Military, NAIMOS Harassment
The Sand and Stone Tipper Association has announced the suspension of all tipper truck operations within the Greater Accra Region until further notice, citing alleged assaults, intimidation and harassment of drivers by individuals claiming to be military personnel or NAIMOS officers.
The association’s decision, which takes effect immediately, is expected to disrupt construction and haulage activities across the capital and surrounding districts, with builders, contractors and suppliers bracing for a halt in the delivery of sand, stone and other aggregates.
According to the association, drivers have endured repeated confrontations with men purporting to be security operatives, who allegedly stop trucks, demand documents, and subject drivers to physical assault and threats. The leadership described the situation as untenable, saying members can no longer guarantee the safety of their drivers or vehicles on the region’s roads.
Association executives said the suspension was reached after exhaustive deliberations and repeated complaints to relevant authorities that yielded no lasting remedy. They indicated that the strike will remain in force until concrete assurances of protection are secured and those responsible for the harassment are brought to account.
The development has raised concerns about the potential ripple effects on the construction sector, where timely delivery of materials is critical. Industry players warn that a prolonged halt could slow projects, inflate costs and deepen uncertainty in an already challenging economic climate.
Drivers who spoke at the association’s meeting recounted harrowing encounters, describing roadblocks, extortion and intimidation that have left many fearful of returning to work. They called on the government and security agencies to intervene decisively and to clarify the mandate of operatives accused of acting outside the law. Officials have not yet issued a formal response to the association’s claims, but pressure is mounting on authorities to address the grievances and restore confidence among transport operators. The association has urged its members to remain calm and law-abiding while awaiting a resolution.
