These Will Happen to Your Toilet If You Drop One Piece of Garlic at Night
You may have heard claims that dropping garlic into a toilet overnight can “kill germs” or “clean the toilet naturally.” While garlic does have natural compounds, doctors and hygiene experts say the effects are limited and often exaggerated. Here’s what actually happens.
1. Garlic Releases Natural Sulfur Compounds Garlic contains compounds such as allicin, which have antimicrobial properties in laboratory conditions. When garlic is crushed or cut and placed in water, small amounts of these compounds may be released, causing a noticeable smell.
However, this does not disinfect a toilet or replace proper cleaning. 2. You May Notice a Strong Odor Garlic has a strong sulfur smell. Leaving it in a toilet overnight can make the bathroom smell unpleasant, especially in enclosed spaces.
This odor does not mean germs are eliminated.
3. It Does NOT Properly Kill Toilet Germs
Toilets contain many types of bacteria. Experts agree that garlic alone is not strong enough to sanitize or disinfect toilet surfaces. Effective cleaning requires approved disinfectants, soap, or bleach-based cleaners.
A single clove of garlic will not clean pipes, remove stains, or unclog drains. There is also no scientific evidence that garlic prevents plumbing problems.
5. Traditional Remedy, Not a Cleaning Solution
The idea comes mostly from folk remedies and social media tips, not medical or sanitation guidelines. While garlic is beneficial when eaten, its use in toilets has no proven hygiene benefit.
Clean toilets regularly with approved disinfectants
Use toilet cleaners designed to kill germs
