“Stop Calling Opoku-Agyemang That Name” – Enam Tells NPP, Ghanaians React
NDC National Communications Officer Gifty Enam Gbedevi has called on members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to stop describing Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as “Grandma.”
According to Gbedevi, the nickname is unsuitable for political discourse because it does not reflect the level of respect and dignity expected of the country’s second-highest office. She made the remarks during an appearance on UTV Ghana, triggering widespread public debate.
However, many Ghanaians have challenged her position, insisting that the term is an affectionate way of honouring an older person. Some argued that it should not be interpreted as an attempt to belittle the Vice President, especially since she has not publicly indicated that she finds it offensive.
The discussion has also prompted comparisons with previous administrations, with some questioning why similar nicknames were not commonly used for former male vice presidents.
The controversy reflects the different ways political statements and cultural expressions are understood in Ghana. While Gbedevi considers the nickname inappropriate, many members of the public believe it represents respect rather than political disrespect.
