Somebody Used N29B Meant For Power Project To Buy Properties, Thinking Nothing Will Happen— Ola Olukoyede

According to a statement by the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, former Minister of Power, Saleh Mamman, was sentenced to 75 years in prison over the diversion of funds meant for the Zungeru and Mambilla hydroelectric power projects.

Olukoyede made the disclosure in a video shared by Arise Television, where he explained how money approved by the Federal Government for major electricity projects was allegedly diverted instead of being used for its intended purpose.

According to the EFCC chairman, the government provided ₦32 billion for the projects, which were expected to contribute to improving electricity generation and addressing some of the country’s power supply challenges. However, he alleged that Mamman diverted ₦29 billion out of the approved amount and used the money to acquire properties in different locations.

The EFCC chairman expressed concern that funds meant for important infrastructure projects could be misused by individuals entrusted with public responsibilities. He explained that the money was supposed to support projects that would benefit Nigerians by improving access to electricity, but the alleged diversion affected the purpose for which the funds were released.

Olukoyede also said Mamman appeared to believe that he would not face consequences for his actions. However, he maintained that the former minister was eventually brought to justice and is currently serving his prison sentence.

Speaking about the case, the EFCC chairman said, “This project was meant to give light but somebody sat on it. The money that government put is 32 billion naira and somebody sat and took 29 billion naira out of the 32 billion naira and just syphoned it, and acquired properties here and there, thinking that nothing will happen. But nemesis caught up with him, he is in jail as I am talking to you.”

The case has drawn attention to the importance of accountability in the management of public funds, particularly money allocated to major infrastructure projects. Nigeria has continued to face electricity supply challenges, making the proper use of funds approved for power development an important issue.

The Zungeru and Mambilla hydroelectric projects are among the major initiatives associated with efforts to improve the country’s electricity capacity. The EFCC chairman’s remarks highlight the commission’s position that individuals responsible for managing public resources must be held accountable when funds are misused.
