Six Chiefs Stars Face Fresh Competition As Elias Mokwana Nears Naturena

Elias Mokwana’s expected move to Kaizer Chiefs could create a selection headache for head coach Fernando Da Cruz, with six attacking players potentially facing greater competition for opportunities at Naturena.

The Bafana Bafana winger has reportedly agreed personal terms with Amakhosi, although the deal is still subject to a medical examination and completion of the remaining formalities. His pace, direct running and ability to operate across the frontline are qualities that could give Chiefs a different attacking option.

However, adding another experienced winger may also affect the roles of players already competing for places in the team.

Faiz Abrahams is among those whose situation could require attention. He joined Chiefs from Stellenbosch FC on a season-long loan that includes an option to buy. With Mokwana potentially strengthening the wide positions, the club may have to consider how much room remains for Abrahams and whether a permanent deal would still fit its plans.

Langelihle Phili could also face a tougher battle. The former Stellenbosch player arrived at Naturena after an impressive campaign in which he scored nine goals and collected both the club’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player awards. Mokwana’s ability to play on either flank could place the two in competition for similar roles.

Pule Mmodi is another experienced option whose minutes could be affected. He has featured on the left wing and has also been used as a wing-back, but Mokwana’s versatility could give Da Cruz another choice in attacking areas.

Wandile Duba may not be a direct competitor because he can also play as a striker. Nevertheless, his ability to operate on the right means the new arrival could influence how frequently he is selected in that position.

Youngsters Asanele Velebayi and Mfundo Vilakazi are also worth watching. Velebayi has featured on the right wing, while Vilakazi can operate as an attacking midfielder or in wider positions. Both could find it harder to secure regular opportunities if Mokwana becomes part of the squad.

Ultimately, the effect will depend on Da Cruz’s preferred formation, the players’ performances and how he distributes playing time across the season. Mokwana’s arrival could strengthen Chiefs’ attacking options, but it may also force some existing players to work harder to retain their places.
