“Ruto got more votes Than you in your own Polling Station” Gachagua Dismisses Justin Muturi Concerns

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has launched a scathing attack on former Attorney General Justin Muturi, questioning his political influence and ability to mobilise voters after allegedly securing only 35 votes in his own polling station during an MCA by-election.

Speaking at his Wamunyoro residence on Tuesday, November 3, Gachagua challenged Muturi to demonstrate his grassroots support before lecturing him on how to organise the opposition and remove President William Ruto from power.

In a pointed exchange, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader reminded Muturi that he had struggled to mobilise voters in his own backyard despite publicly expressing his willingness to help the opposition defeat Ruto.

“My brother from Mbeere, I don’t know what the problem is. You are saying you want to assist us in removing Kasongo, yet you went to an MCA by-election and, at your own polling station, you were only able to mobilise 35 people. Kasongo beat you with 238 votes, and you want to lecture Riggy G about numbers?” Gachagua posed.

He used the figures to question Muturi’s ability to influence voters beyond his immediate political stronghold, arguing that opposition leaders should demonstrate their electoral strength on the ground rather than rely on public statements and political criticism.

Gachagua maintained that defeating Ruto in the 2027 General Election would require extensive grassroots mobilisation, insisting that presidential ambitions could not be achieved through boardroom meetings, press conferences or political declarations.

The former Mathira MP also defended his approach to opposition politics, saying the numbers he commands have been secured through deliberate mobilisation and political campaigns.

His remarks come amid growing differences among opposition leaders over the strategy for challenging Ruto, with Muturi accusing Gachagua of bullying fellow principals and undermining efforts to build a united political front.

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has also criticised Gachagua’s approach, warning that his attitude towards other opposition leaders could complicate efforts to establish a formidable alliance ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, Gachagua dismissed the criticism, challenging his colleagues to prove their political influence by going to the ground and convincing Kenyans to support their respective parties.

The latest exchange adds another dimension to the growing debate over who has the strongest grassroots mobilisation machinery within the opposition as political leaders position themselves for the 2027 presidential contest.
