Ruto Faces Major Problem After Announcing Bayern-Ajax Friendly Match In Nairobi, Details
Six petitioners have moved to the High Court seeking to stop the government from using public funds to finance the proposed friendly match between Bayern Munich and AFC Ajax scheduled for January 5, 2027, at Nairobi’s Raila Odinga International Stadium.
The petitioners filed the case seeking conservatory orders barring the government from allocating, releasing or spending public resources on the international football event pending the determination of the case.
They have also asked the court to compel the government to disclose sponsorship agreements with the two European clubs within seven days.
Additionally, they want authorities to reveal the identities of corporate sponsors, their financial contributions and a detailed breakdown of anticipated expenses, including players’ appearance fees, travel, accommodation, security and insurance.
The court documents cite reports indicating that hosting the clubs could cost approximately Ksh724.6 million (€5 million), although the petitioners say the figure requires official verification.
The case comes after Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi maintained that the event would be privately sponsored, insisting that taxpayers’ money would not be used.
President William Ruto had announced the match as part of Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, with Mwangi confirming that both clubs would field their senior teams.
