RIP: Form Four Girl Walks into Class for Her KCSE Exam, Only to Die Minutes After Starting
A family in Homa Bay County is grieving the loss of their 17-year-old daughter, a Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidate who died shortly after sitting her first papers.
The Form Four student at Alaru Central Mixed Senior School in Rachuonyo West Sub-County died on Monday, November 2, after completing English and Chemistry Paper 1.
Reports indicate she developed severe chest pains that evening, prompting her family and teachers to seek medical help. According to her father, she was rushed to hospital but died while receiving treatment.
Preliminary reports suggest the girl had shown signs of being unwell earlier in the day, which led teachers to contact her parents.
Her father reportedly received a call from the school principal about her worsening condition, and he rushed to the school to check on her before she was taken for treatment.
The family said the teenager had a history of illness, but the exact medical complications that led to her death have not been established. Her father also spoke of the financial struggles he had endured to keep her in school, adding that she dreamed of becoming a lawyer.
Her death came a day after candidates across the country began their written KCSE examinations on Monday, November 2. A total of 1,048,355 candidates are sitting this yearβs exams, which opened with English Paper 1 in the morning and Chemistry Paper 1 in the afternoon.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba said the examinations will run for three weeks and end on November 20, after which marking will begin.
He added that the government, through the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and its partners, has tightened the security of examination materials, greatly reducing the risk of leakage and early exposure.
