Ramaphosa Finally Breaks Silence as Cabinet Considers His Appointment – His Response Below
South Africa’s policing leadership could be heading for a major change as KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has been recommended for the powerful position of national Hawks boss.
The proposed appointment has attracted considerable attention, particularly after President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed that Mkhwanazi’s name has been submitted to Cabinet for consideration.
Acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia has formally submitted a Cabinet memorandum seeking approval for Mkhwanazi to become the head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks.
Speaking about the proposed appointment, Ramaphosa explained that the final decision rests with Cabinet. He indicated that the announcement would only be made after the necessary discussions and approval process had been completed.
According to the President, the matter is part of the Cabinet’s decision-making process, and the public will be informed once a final decision has been reached.
Mkhwanazi became a major national figure in July 2025 after making serious allegations about criminal syndicates allegedly infiltrating South Africa’s criminal justice system.
His revelations also raised questions about alleged political interference and corruption within law enforcement structures.
Following those allegations, Ramaphosa established the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry to investigate claims involving criminal networks and possible interference in the country’s criminal justice system.
The proposed appointment comes at a time when the Hawks are under pressure to strengthen their efforts against organised crime, corruption and other serious offences.
However, Mkhwanazi’s appointment is not yet final. Cabinet must first approve the recommendation before the process can be completed.
If approved, he would move from his current position as KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner to lead one of South Africa’s most important crime-fighting units.
For now, South Africans are waiting to hear what Cabinet will decide about Mkhwanazi’s possible new position.
