Orlando Pirates Coach Explains Why Key Star Was Dropped for Soweto Derby

Orlando Pirates manager Abdeslam Ouaddou has provided an explanation for his decision to leave young defender Sigomoshe out of the starting eleven during the highly anticipated Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs.

The Moroccan coach chose to field experienced defender Deon Hotto instead, a selection that generated questions among Pirates supporters because of the significance of the encounter and the youngster’s growing involvement in the team.

Speaking after the game, Ouaddou acknowledged that his tactical approach did not deliver the outcome he had anticipated. He explained that selecting Hotto was based on the specific challenge he expected Pirates to face against their city rivals.

According to the coach, Hotto’s experience was considered an important advantage when dealing with the attacking threat of Kaizer Chiefs’ right-footed winger. He believed the veteran defender possessed the necessary qualities to manage that particular assignment in such a demanding fixture.

Another factor behind his decision was the enormous pressure that comes with participating in a Soweto Derby. Ouaddou explained that he wanted to avoid placing unnecessary pressure on Sigomoshe, who is still adjusting to life at Orlando Pirates following his arrival from Milford.

Nevertheless, the coach recognised the youngster’s development and praised the progress he has made since joining the Buccaneers. He also acknowledged the positive qualities and potential the defender has demonstrated during his time at the club.

Ouaddou further admitted that his selection had consequences for Pirates’ performance, especially when moving forward. The team struggled to receive some of the attacking support and overlapping runs usually provided by full-backs, affecting the overall balance of their attacking play.
