NPP stages ‘Y3gye y3 sika’ demo over Ablakwa, evacuation and passport controversies today

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is holding a nationwide demonstration today, Tuesday, November 3, 2026, to demand the removal of Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and investigations into controversies surrounding a recent evacuation exercise and the issuance of diplomatic and service passports.

The protest, dubbed “Y3gye y3 sika”, is scheduled to begin at 6:00 a.m. at Villaggio, near the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange and opposite Accra Mall.

Demonstrators are expected to march to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs before proceeding to Jubilee House.

The party announced the protest at a press conference on Thursday, October 29, with its National Youth Organiser, Abanga Fuseini Yakubu, calling on party members and other Ghanaians to join the campaign for accountability in the management of public funds and official documents.

“The public money belongs to the people, so do the official documents of the Republic. The ministers hold them in trust, and when the trust is abused, it is the people who must rise and demand accountability,” he said.

The NPP has accused Mr Ablakwa of wrongdoing in connection with the two issues. However, the allegations have not been established and remain subject to investigation.

The party is demanding the minister’s immediate dismissal, alongside investigations by the Attorney-General and the Office of the Special Prosecutor into the controversies. It is also calling for the prosecution of the minister and any other officials found culpable.

Regarding the evacuation exercise, the opposition party wants the government to publish the original invoices, contracts and proof of payment for all charter flights used.

It is also demanding the release of the full passenger manifest and beneficiary list to establish the reported evacuation of 1,964 Ghanaians.

The party is further calling for an independent audit of the total expenditure on the exercise.

On the issuance of diplomatic and service passports, the NPP wants the government to publish details of all such documents issued since January 2025.

It says the information should indicate the official positions or status that qualified each recipient for the passports, as well as the authorities responsible for approving their issuance.

The party is also demanding the cancellation of any passports found to have been issued improperly.

Ahead of the demonstration, Mr Yakubu called on youth organisers, constituency and polling station executives, women’s groups and other supporters to mobilise for the protest.

He urged participants to maintain peace and discipline throughout the exercise and avoid actions that could lead to disorder.

“Our strength is in our numbers and our discipline, never in disorder,” he said.

He added that the party would continue to demand answers until its concerns were addressed.

The demonstration marks an escalation of the NPP’s criticism of Mr Ablakwa over the evacuation expenditure and the issuance of diplomatic and service passports.

The party has also called for the resignation of the Minister for Youth and Sports over a separate visa controversy that preceded the resignation of the National Sports Authority’s Chief Executive.
