Nigeria’s Hopes Of Reaching The World Cup Final Takes A Huge Blow After Yesterday’s Result
Nigeria’s Flamingos have been handed a difficult challenge in their quest to reach the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after Brazil defeated China 2-1 to secure a place in the semifinals.
According to a report by ESPN on Monday, November 2, 2026, Brazil’s victory means Nigeria will face the South American side in the semifinals rather than China, setting up a difficult encounter for the Nigerian youngsters as they seek to reach the competition’s final for the first time in their history.
Before Brazil’s quarterfinal meeting with China, many Nigerian supporters would have preferred the Asian side to progress, believing that China could present a more favourable challenge for the Flamingos.
However, Brazil demonstrated their resilience by coming from behind to secure a dramatic victory and book their place in the last four.
China initially took the lead in the 42nd minute through Wu Yichen, giving the Asian side an advantage shortly before halftime.
Brazil, however, responded almost immediately after the restart. Helena found the equaliser just 42 seconds into the second half, bringing her team back into the contest and changing the momentum of the encounter.
The Brazilian youngster eventually completed her brace in the 87th minute, scoring the decisive goal that secured a 2-1 comeback victory for Brazil and ended China’s hopes of reaching the semifinals.
The result presents a tougher challenge for Nigeria, who must now overcome Brazil to secure a place in the final. Although China had also demonstrated their quality by eliminating France on penalties in the round of 16, Brazil’s performance against the Asian side showed the attacking threat and determination the Flamingos will have to contend with.
Meanwhile, Nigeria secured their semifinal qualification after defeating Venezuela 1-0 in their quarterfinal encounter on Sunday.
The match was closely contested, with the Flamingos struggling to convert their opportunities despite creating several chances against the Venezuelan side.
With the encounter heading towards a penalty shootout, Nigeria eventually found the breakthrough in the 89th minute after captain Azeezat Oduntan converted a penalty.
The spot-kick was awarded after Oluebube Umejiaku was brought down in the opposition’s penalty area, giving Nigeria a late opportunity to secure victory.
Oduntan made no mistake from the penalty spot, sending the Flamingos into the semifinals and keeping their hopes of winning the tournament alive.
