Ngilu Speaks Moments After Leaving Wamunyoro

Former Kitui Governor and NARC leader Charity Ngilu on Tuesday expressed strong confidence in Rigathi Gachagua’s commitment to building a broad opposition front following their meeting at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri.

“After meeting Gachagua today, I am convinced he is fully committed to a united, and more inclusive alternative to the government we have today,” Ngilu said.

The discussions centred on lessons from the 2002 National Rainbow Coalition that ended KANU’s long rule. Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for the Citizens Party, described Ngilu as the “Iron Lady of Kenyan politics” and a key architect of that successful alliance alongside the late Mwai Kibaki and Kijana Wamalwa.

He said Kenya faces a similar “2002 moment” and pledged that the opposition would unite behind a single presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 elections.

The meeting forms part of ongoing consultations by the former deputy president with various opposition figures as they seek to challenge President William Ruto’s administration.
