N2.59trn cash injection to influence borrowing costs
The Nigerian money market is expected to witness a significant liquidity boost this week, with approximately N2.59 trillion projected to flow into the banking system through Open Market Operations (OMO) and treasury bills maturities, potentially reinforcing demand for fixed-income instruments and exerting downward pressure on short-term yields. According to analysts, the anticipated inflows comprise N2.02 trillion in OMO maturities and N572.55 billion in treasury bills maturities. The sizeable injection is expected to sustain excess liquidity across the banking system, providing market participants with additional funds to position in the secondary Treasury bills market this week. Research firms, Cordros Research and Cowry Research in their assessment of the market, both anticipate supportive liquidity conditions this week, although the extent of the anticipated liquidity expansion could be influenced by the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) liquidity management activities. In particular, fresh OMO issuances could absorb some of the expected inflows, moderating the amount of cash available within the banking system. Similarly, the Debt Management Office’s (DMO) primary market activities could influence the direction of yields, depending on the volume of new Treasury bills supply and investors’ subscription appetite. Nigeria risks higher borrowing costs after failing US fiscal transparency test againManufacturers seek deeper rate cuts to ease borrowing costs “System liquidity should remain supportive next week, underpinned by expected inflows of NGN2.02 trillion from OMO maturities. However, OMO issuances could moderate system liquidity by mopping up some of the excess liquidity in the system”, Cordros Research said. For its own part, Cowry Research, said, “liquidity conditions are expected to remain supportive in the coming week, underpinned by anticipated inflows of approximately N2.59trn, comprising N2.02trn in OMO maturities and N572.55bn in Treasury bills maturities”. Nevertheless, the sizeable maturity inflows are expected to provide a favourable liquidity backdrop for the money market, with secondary market Treasury bills yields potentially facing downward pressure as investors deploy excess cash into available instruments. Overall, the direction of money market yields this week will largely depend on how much of the N2.59 trillion in expected inflows remains within the banking system after accounting for the CBN’s liquidity sterilisation activities and government borrowing operations.
