Mokonyane warns youth against social media narratives on ANC — urges them to consider future choices

First Deputy Secretary-General of the African National Congress (ANC), Nomvula Mokonyane, has urged young South Africans not to allow social media narratives and criticism of the governing party to influence their political decisions, insisting that they should carefully consider their future before choosing who to support.

Speaking outside the Noordheuwel Golf Club in Krugersdorp, Mokonyane challenged young people to approach political discussions with open minds and look beyond information and opinions circulating on social media platforms.

Her remarks come amid growing public dissatisfaction over several socio-economic challenges facing South Africa, particularly among younger citizens who continue to grapple with unemployment, limited educational opportunities and concerns about gender-based violence.

Mokonyane acknowledged that these issues remain serious challenges requiring attention. However, she maintained that the ANC had played an important role in bringing stability to the country and urged young people to consider the party’s contribution when assessing its record in government.

The ANC leader’s comments reflect the party’s ongoing efforts to reconnect with younger voters, a demographic whose political support has become increasingly important amid changing electoral dynamics and growing competition from opposition parties.

Young South Africans have increasingly used social media platforms to express their frustrations with government performance, political leadership and the country’s economic situation. These platforms have also become influential spaces for political campaigning, public debate and mobilisation.

Mokonyane’s appeal suggests that the ANC wants young voters to look beyond online criticism and make informed decisions based on a broader understanding of the country’s political history, current challenges and future prospects.

With South Africa facing persistent economic and social difficulties, the party’s ability to convince younger generations that it can address their concerns remains a significant political challenge.

Her message ultimately places emphasis on critical thinking, encouraging young people to examine political parties, evaluate their promises and consider the long-term consequences of their electoral choices rather than being influenced solely by social media conversations.
