Levy Cuts Kick In – Petrol 1c Lower – Diesel Over R1 Cheaper Tonight
South African motorists will welcome relief at the pumps from midnight tonight, 3 November, as November’s fuel price adjustments come into force. Petrol of both grades falls by just 1 cent per litre, but diesel drivers will see a substantial reduction — R1.10 for 0.05 % sulphur and R1.20 for the cleaner 0.005 % variant — effective Wednesday.
The cuts are driven by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s temporary fuel levy relief, running 4 November to 1 December 2026: the general fuel levy drops R1.50 per litre for petrol and R3 per litre for diesel. Reduced support continues until 5 January 2027, easing to R1 and R1.50 respectively. The R10‑billion intervention is funded by returning an earlier transfer to the Central Energy Fund to the National Revenue Fund.
The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources notes that steeper falls were constrained by rising global oil prices and a weaker rand, while an increased slate levy partially offset petrol relief. Meanwhile, illuminating paraffin rises R2.75 per litre and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) climbs R1.83 per kilogram — increases that will impact low‑income households most heavily.
For road transport and freight operators, the diesel cut offers meaningful respite, though consumers relying on paraffin and gas face fresh cost pressures. As the new prices kick in, many will be watching to see whether pump savings translate into broader price stability, or if these adjustments are just a temporary pause in the cost‑of‑living squeeze.
