Ledama Olekina Criticises Opposition Leaders Idolising Rigathi Gachagua Who He Says Stands Impeached

Narok Senator Ledama Olekina has said some veteran politicians are making a mistake by idolising former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who currently stands impeached.

Olekina spoke on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at a time when opposition leaders are intensifying consultations on a united front ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“The biggest mistake some old politicians are making is idolising Riggy G, an impeached former Deputy President,” he said.

Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), was removed from office by the Senate on October 17, 2024, after the motion sailed through in the National Assembly.

Olekina’s remarks come as Gachagua continues to host opposition figures at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County. Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka visited him on Monday, October 26.

Kalonzo said their friendship had remained intact since the impeachment and described the trip as a reciprocal visit after Gachagua went to his Muuna home in Tseikuru. Reports on the meeting did not show that it produced a coalition agreement.

Former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu also visited Wamunyoro on Tuesday. Gachagua said she took him through how the 2002 National Rainbow Coalition was formed and run. He said the opposition aims to settle on one presidential candidate.

While some opposition leaders have been praising Gachagua’s influence, others have recently criticised the former second in command’s conduct.

Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang’i said on NTV on Sunday that Gachagua’s arrogance and pride could split the opposition. He also said the “mole” narrative advanced by DCP risks dividing the camp.

Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi accused Gachagua on Monday of political bullying and double-speak. He said no Kenyan president has been made by one community alone.

People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, speaking at a rally in Njoro on October 21, urged the opposition to be inclusive and warned against suspicion towards those who want to join.
