Kenya Strikes Creative Economy Deal With Idris Elba as Ruto Government Targets Global Opportunities
Kenya has entered into a new partnership with British actor Sir Idris Elba aimed at expanding opportunities for local creative talent through technology, investment and access to international markets.
Foreign Affairs Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei announced the development on Tuesday, November 3, following the signing of a Statement of Intent between the Kenyan government and the Akuna Group during the 2026 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Antigua and Barbuda.
Sing’Oei signed the agreement on behalf of Kenya, while Elba, who serves as chairman of the Akuna Group, represented the organisation.
The partnership will focus on several areas, including the creative economy, responsible artificial intelligence, digital innovation, youth skills development, financing for content creators and access to global markets.
It also brings Kenya into a broader Commonwealth Creative Economy Partnership involving Ghana, Sierra Leone and Barbados.
According to Sing’Oei, the agreement is intended to connect Kenyan creatives with international investors, technological resources and business opportunities, helping transform creative talent into sustainable employment and profitable enterprises.
He described the initiative as a major boost to the government’s Talanta Hela programme, which focuses on identifying, nurturing and promoting talent among young people.
The partnership is expected to strengthen the commercial side of the programme by creating opportunities for artists and other creatives to monetise their work and reach audiences beyond Kenya.
Sing’Oei further revealed that President William Ruto had invited Elba to visit Kenya during the forthcoming Internet Governance Forum (IGF).
The development adds to Kenya’s growing diplomatic and economic engagements with international partners as the government seeks to attract investment and expand opportunities for young people.
The agreement could also provide Kenyan content creators, filmmakers, musicians and other creative professionals with new pathways to compete in international markets.
