Kaura Crushes Rivals in APC Zamfara North Senatorial Rerun, Wins Ticket by Over 15,000 Votes

According to a report by DAILY POST on Tuesday 3 November 2026, after sweeping to victory in the APC’s recent primary election, Yahaya Tijjani Kaura has been named the party’s senatorial candidate for Zamfara North.

Kaura easily won the Gusau rerun exercise with 16,758 votes, while Sahabi Yari Alhaji came in second with 1,465 votes. With 1,447 votes, another contender, Abdullahi Shinkafi, came in third.

After the APC’s previous senatorial primary in Zamfara North was declared invalid by the Sokoto Court of Appeal for severe violations of the party’s electoral guidelines and the Electoral Act, he emerged as the winner of a new primary.

The ruling of the Federal High Court in Gusau, which had invalidated the primary election in August 2026, was upheld by the appellate court, which was headed by Justice Tunde Oyebamiji Awotoye, in its judgment delivered last month.

Aside from ruling in Shinkafi’s favor, the court voiced concern over the reported voting figures, wondering how an aspirant could have received as many as 70,000 votes in a senatorial district with only 26,000 registered APC members. Shinkafi had successfully challenged the credibility of the earlier exercise.

The APC held a new primary to choose a candidate for the Zamfara North Senatorial District after the court got involved.

After verifying that Kaura met all of the criteria outlined in the party’s constitution and electoral guidelines, the Returning Officer of the APC Senatorial Primary Election Committee, Alhaji Sani Abdullahi, announced the results and declared Kaura the winner.

The results were certified by Abdullahi as well, who verified that Kaura had the most votes cast in the exercise.

The announcement means that Kaura will be running for the Zamfara North senatorial seat in the upcoming National Assembly election as an APC candidate.

The magnitude of his triumph in the rerun primary, which was held to replace the previous election invalidated by the courts, is underscored by his victory margin of 15,293 votes over his closest rival.
