Jubilee Responds to Gachagua’s Attack on Opposition Leaders
Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Jeremiah Kioni has called on opposition leaders to put national interests above personal ambitions, warning against political intimidation, regional supremacy and attempts by individuals to dominate the opposition.
In a strongly worded statement, Kioni invoked the famous words of former Cabinet minister Prof. George Saitoti, who once said, “There comes a time when the nation is more important than an individual.”
According to Kioni, that moment has arrived, urging political leaders to embrace unity, democratic principles and mutual respect as they pursue their political ambitions.
He maintained that no individual owns the opposition or has exclusive authority over a particular region, insisting that every Kenyan has an equal right to choose a political party, campaign freely and express political opinions without intimidation.
Kioni criticised leaders who demand democracy while attempting to silence those holding different views, arguing that political disagreements should be handled through dialogue rather than bullying or condescending remarks.
He further warned against what he described as attempts by influential politicians to position themselves as gatekeepers of communities, saying leadership should be founded on listening, persuasion and earning public trust.
Addressing a fellow political leader, Kioni emphasised that respect cannot be imposed through lectures or orders but must be earned through humility, character, consistency and respect for differing opinions.
He cautioned that the opposition risks weakening itself if it becomes dominated by personal rivalries, competing egos and individual political interests instead of a common national agenda.
According to Kioni, Kenya’s future should remain the central priority for leaders seeking to challenge the government, regardless of their parties, regions or presidential ambitions.
He concluded by reiterating Saitoti’s message that national interests must always take precedence over personal considerations.
His remarks add to the ongoing debate about unity, leadership and cooperation within Kenya’s opposition as political players position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
