It Was A Scam—Former Referee Victor Hlungwani Drops Dangerous Confession About Soweto Derby Results

BOMBSHELL: Former PSL Referee Victor Hlungwani Exposes TWO Major Errors In Soweto Derby Officiating

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 3 NOVEMBER 2026

The controversial officiating during the recent Soweto Derby has taken another dramatic turn after former Premier Soccer League referee Victor Hlungwani delivered a verdict on two important goal decisions involving Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

The highly anticipated encounter, played at FNB Stadium on Saturday, ended in a 2-1 victory for the Buccaneers, but the result has continued to generate heated discussions, particularly around the decisions made by referee Luxolo Badi and his assistants.

Hlungwani has now examined two incidents that attracted significant attention during the match, suggesting that the officials made mistakes in both situations.

The first incident involved Yanela Mbuthuma’s opening goal for Orlando Pirates in the 24th minute.

The former referee argued that the Pirates striker was in an offside position when Thapelo Mokobodi played the ball through to him.

After examining the available footage and explaining the positioning of the players, Hlungwani maintained that Mbuthuma should not have been allowed to score.

“Mbuthuma here is offside. This goal was not supposed to have stand. This is not right from this situation. It [the goal] should not have been allowed,” Hlungwani explained during his analysis on Soccerzone.

His assessment will undoubtedly attract attention from Kaizer Chiefs supporters, particularly considering that the opening goal gave their biggest rivals an early advantage.

However, Hlungwani’s biggest talking point also concerned another Pirates attacking moment involving Oswin Appollis.

The winger thought he had scored during the closing stages of the match, only for the assistant referee to raise the offside flag.

Interestingly, Hlungwani disagreed with that decision, arguing that Chiefs defender Zitha Kwinika had played Appollis onside.

“Appollis scored a goal that was ruled offside, and we have Kwinika playing Appollis onside. This goal was in line with the FIFA Laws of the game. This flag [by assistant referee] is wrong in this situation,” he added.

The two assessments have added another dimension to the growing debate surrounding the derby’s officiating.

Chiefs coach Fernando Da Cruz had already expressed frustration with the officiating after the defeat, arguing that Mbuthuma’s opening goal should have been disallowed.

Meanwhile, Pirates secured all three points through goals from Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi, with Pule Mmodi scoring for Amakhosi.

With Hlungwani now questioning two important decisions, the Soweto Derby controversy is showing no signs of disappearing.

The debate surrounding the officials’ performance is likely to continue among supporters of both clubs.
