If You Leave Me, I Will Shut Down Every Political And Religious Station — Sam George Drops Bombshell
The Communications Minister has said what many people think but are afraid to say.
Sam Nartey George says Ghana’s broadcasting space is full of nonsense.
Why should a country of just 35 million people have almost 700 radio stations and 120 television stations?
He calls it pure madness. In another forum, he called it “media tyranny” — not media freedom.
Speaking at a public forum on Ghana’s media future, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation said the industry needs serious restructuring — and if he gets government backing, he will close down most of these stations.
And he went further: If it were left to him alone, he would shut down every single political and religious media house in Ghana.
According to Sam George, many political parties and religious bodies are hiding behind business names to get licences, and then using the airwaves to push propaganda, hatred, and division.
That, he says, is destroying the media landscape.
He explained that Ghana’s media is celebrated as one of the most vibrant in Africa — over 700 FM stations, over 100 TV channels. But vibrancy without sense is just noise.
Most of these stations cannot even pay workers. No adverts. No business model. Just politics and preaching 24/7.
He revealed that there was already a plan to close 64 media houses for breaking the rules, but it was stopped after the President intervened.
Now he is warning: If things don’t change, the shutdown will come.
His comments have sparked serious debate.
Is Ghana really over-saturated? Do we need 700 radios saying the same thing? Or is Sam George planning to kill free speech in the name of regulation?
One thing is clear — the Minister is coming for the airwaves, and many stations may not survive.
