Gachagua Mocks Matiang’i Over 2027 Presidential Bid, Reveals 27 Meetings Held by Methu Since US Trip
Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has taken a swipe at former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, questioning his political mobilisation efforts ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Gachagua challenged Matiang’i and other opposition leaders to demonstrate their commitment to unseating President William Ruto instead of waiting for other politicians to build political support on their behalf.
Speaking on Tuesday, November 3, Gachagua appeared to take aim at Matiang’i over what he portrayed as a lack of grassroots mobilisation, contrasting his political activities with those of leaders allied to his Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).
The former Deputy President revealed that his young political allies, led by DCP Secretary General John Methu, had organised 27 meetings since his departure for the United States.
According to Gachagua, the meetings demonstrated that his political team had continued building its grassroots network even in his absence.
He questioned why some opposition figures appeared to be comfortable holding meetings in hotels while expecting others to secure the political support needed to propel them to the presidency.
“Since I left for the US, my young leaders, led by Methu, have held 27 meetings. Meanwhile, you just sit in a hotel waiting for us to hand you the presidency. How?” Gachagua posed.
His remarks appeared to be directed at Matiang’i, who has been associated with the United Opposition’s efforts to identify a formidable presidential candidate to challenge Ruto in 2027.
Gachagua’s latest comments come amid growing disagreements within the opposition camp over political strategy, leadership and the process of selecting a flag bearer.
The former Deputy President has repeatedly insisted that opposition leaders must invest in grassroots mobilisation rather than concentrate on boardroom negotiations and political meetings in Nairobi.
His reference to Methu also highlighted the growing role of younger DCP leaders in organising political activities and expanding the party’s presence across different regions.
The remarks could further expose the divisions among opposition leaders as they seek to coordinate their campaigns against Ruto.
With the 2027 elections approaching, the question of who will lead the opposition presidential ticket remains a major subject of political debate.
