Gachagua Breaks Silence After Opposition Leaders Accuse Him of Undermining Unity

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has broken his silence following accusations from a section of opposition leaders who have questioned his approach to leadership and cooperation within the United Opposition.

Gachagua appeared to take issue with leaders he believes are attempting to dictate how he should conduct himself, insisting that nobody should address him as though he were their child.

Speaking during his latest political remarks, the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader maintained that he would not accept being lectured or treated as a junior partner by fellow opposition politicians.

“Nobody should talk to me as if I were their child,” Gachagua declared, in a statement that appeared to signal growing disagreements within the opposition camp.

The former Deputy President also took aim at a group of leaders whom he accused of holding private meetings while claiming they had the political capacity to remove President William Ruto from power.

According to Gachagua, some politicians within the United Opposition were making ambitious political declarations from the comfort of their homes rather than engaging in the difficult work of building a formidable political movement.

“There is a group within the United Opposition sitting with their wives, claiming they will remove Ruto from their homes,” he said.

His remarks come amid growing political conversations about the leadership, strategy and direction of the United Opposition as different factions position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Gachagua has increasingly insisted on the importance of recognising political strength, grassroots mobilisation and the contribution of individual leaders in determining the opposition’s electoral strategy.

The latest remarks could further expose divisions within the opposition, particularly over who should take charge of its political direction and how leaders should relate with one another.

With the 2027 elections approaching, the opposition faces the challenge of maintaining unity while navigating competing presidential ambitions and disagreements over leadership.

Gachagua’s latest intervention suggests that the disagreements are far from over, raising fresh questions about whether the political formation can remain united in its efforts to challenge President Ruto.
