Flamingos Beat Venezuela 1-0 To Reach U17 Women’s World Cup Semi-Final, Nigerians Celebrate

Good news for Nigeria as the Flamingos have booked a place in the semi-final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after beating Venezuela 1-0 in their quarter-final encounter.

Awka Gist gathered that the match was played on Tuesday, and it was a late goal from Oduntan that sealed the victory for Nigeria and sent the team to the semi-final.

According to reports, the Flamingos dominated the game from the start, creating many chances but Venezuela goalkeeper kept them out until the late minutes of the game. Nigerians who watched the match said the girls played with heart and showed that Nigerian women football is growing.

A football fan in Awka who spoke to Awka Gist said, “These girls are the future of Super Falcons. They play better than some Super Eagles players. We are proud of them.”

Another fan at Aroma Junction said, “Na wa, Flamingos don carry Nigeria go semi-final. If dem win semi, na final be that. Make NFF give them better bonus o, no be only Super Eagles dem dey pay.”

The Flamingos have been one of the best teams in the tournament, winning their group games and now beating Venezuela to reach the last four. Many Nigerians are now expecting the team to go all the way and win the trophy.

According to football analysts, the win is a big boost for women’s football in Nigeria, especially after the Super Falcons were nominated for Women’s National Team of the Year at the 2026 CAF Awards.

Meanwhile, the Super Eagles are also preparing for their AFCON 2027 qualifiers against Tanzania. Tanzania’s Taifa Stars are expected to arrive in Uyo on Sunday ahead of the match on Friday, November 13 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium. The return leg will be in Dar es Salaam on November 17.

Nigeria will be looking to use home advantage to win in Uyo, after starting the qualifiers with a 2-1 win over Madagascar and a 3-0 defeat to Guinea-Bissau.

Also, NFF is working to secure Newcastle forward William Osula for the Super Eagles, while Hull City midfielder Tim Iroegbunam is waiting for FIFA approval to switch from England to Nigeria.

As of the time of filing this report, Nigerians are celebrating the Flamingos on social media, with many calling them the pride of the nation.
