The Federal Government has started giving selected struggling Nigerians ₦50,000 every month to help them cope with the high cost of food and other expenses.

Humanitarian Affairs Minister Dr Bernard Doro announced the programme in a statement dated October 30.

Doro said it is meant to help households cope with rising food prices and the high cost of living.

The amount will be reviewed regularly, and beneficiaries will be told before any change is made.

Payments are being handled by licensed digital financial service providers.

Eligible people will receive an SMS asking for their consent.

Once they agree, the money goes straight to their bank account or mobile wallet.

The approved providers are ALAT by Wema, MoMo PSB, NairaGram, OPay and Moniepoint.

Their USSD codes are 94523#, 6710#, 72600#, 95520# and 557327#, respectively.

The Youth Economic Intervention and De-radicalisation Programme said payments are ongoing and that people will be notified through their registered phone numbers.

Those who have not received a text but whose status shows “NOT SELECTED” should wait for the next batch.

That does not guarantee they will be paid.

Doro said no one needs to apply, pay a fee or register through an agent.

He warned people not to share their NIN or BVN with anyone.

Anyone who is unsure about a message or is asked for money should call the official NERSI helpline on 0700-022-2222.
