Edwin Sifuna’s Wife Didi Wamukoya’s Novel Explores Love, Marriage and Ambition in Kenyan Society

Didi Wamukoya, the wife of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, is attracting attention for her literary work, with her romance novel Wakhaba Will Marry exploring love, ambition, relationships and the expectations placed on young people in Kenyan society.

The novel follows Wakhaba, a young man from a rural Kenyan village who makes history by becoming the first person in his community to obtain two university degrees.

After completing his studies, Wakhaba builds a promising career in Nairobi as an agricultural researcher specialising in drought-resistant crops. His professional achievements earn him international recognition, but success does not shield him from pressure back home.

Despite his academic qualifications and growing career, members of his village remain concerned about one aspect of his personal life: his decision to remain unmarried.

As questions about marriage become increasingly persistent, Wakhaba finds himself navigating complicated relationships with six women whose presence influences different stages of his life.

His childhood friend Anaya represents a lasting connection to his past, while Kamila, a university lecturer, introduces a complicated romantic relationship.

Zalika, a former classmate, develops into a corporate rival, bringing competition and personal tensions into his journey.

Other important characters include Perpetua, a politically active woman who introduces him to Kenya’s political circles, Zoe, an American aid worker who exposes him to different perspectives, and Elyaka, a lawyer whose arrival brings secrets with potentially serious consequences.

Through these characters, Wamukoya explores the difficult choices people face when balancing romantic relationships, professional ambitions, family expectations and personal identity.

The story moves between rural Kenyan life and the busy urban environment of Nairobi. It is also set against the backdrop of Kenya’s 2010 constitutional reforms, providing a historical and political context for the characters’ experiences.

Originally self-published around November 2020, Wakhaba Will Marry was updated and reissued in early 2025.

The novel is available through Nuria Bookstore for KSh 1,200 and can also be purchased on Amazon. According to the published information, it has received positive reader ratings, ranging between 4.8 and 5.0 out of five on Amazon and Goodreads.

Wamukoya has also written The King’s Bracelet: A Historical Fiction Novel, another work exploring her interest in storytelling and historical themes. The book is also listed at Nuria Bookstore for KSh 1,200.

Beyond her writing career, Wamukoya is an accomplished Kenyan lawyer whose professional interests include environmental law, natural resources and the fight against wildlife crime.

She previously served as Head of Prosecution at the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and currently works as Director of Counter Wildlife Trafficking at the African Wildlife Foundation.

Her legal work also includes co-authored publications focusing on natural resources and environmental justice in Kenya.

According to her Amazon author profile, her writing explores historical and contemporary Kenyan experiences while addressing universal subjects such as love, family, conflict, justice and personal identity.

Away from her professional responsibilities, Wamukoya lists reading, crocheting, sewing and cooking among her interests.

Her work in law, wildlife conservation and fiction writing reflects a career that extends beyond her public profile as the wife of Senator Edwin Sifuna.
