Dad, I Hope You Find Comfort in Prison

Dad, I Hope You Find Comfort in Prison

These were the chilling words of a 13-year-old girl whose HIV-positive father raped her without protection, fully aware he could transmit the virus. The father has been sentenced to life in prison for this unimaginable crime.

The 41-year-old was found guilty of two counts of rape and attempted murder in the Vredenburg Regional Court after agreeing to a plea deal with the State.

On Thursday, he received a life sentence for the first count of rape, 35 years for the second count of rape, and 25 years for attempted murder, with all sentences set to run concurrently.

The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) praised the sentence, noting that the man had betrayed the trust given to him as the girl’s biological father.

NPA spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila stated, “The attempted murder conviction stemmed from the State’s assertion that the accused intended to kill his daughter by engaging in unprotected sexual intercourse while aware of his HIV-positive status and the risk of transmission.”

In his plea agreement, the man acknowledged that the girl had been living with him since she was four, following his separation from her mother.

Ntabazalila reported that on May 23, 2025, the man’s partner allegedly confronted him with pornographic material supposedly discovered on the girl’s cellphone, inciting his anger.

The court learned that he instructed his daughter to gather her things, claiming he would take her to her mother’s house.

Instead, he drove her to a remote location behind a beach in Paternoster.

Once there, he allegedly forced the child to lie on her back, removed her pants and underwear, and proceeded to rape her.

He then drove her back home without taking her to her mother’s place.

The accused admitted to being aware of his HIV-positive status and did not use protection during the assault.

Regional Court Prosecutor Chandre Minnaar highlighted that the victim’s age and her reliance on the adults entrusted with her care made her particularly vulnerable.

She emphasized that the defendant’s actions represented a severe betrayal of the trust critical to the parent-child relationship.

In her victim impact statement, the girl expressed the devastation caused by her father’s actions.

“What happened made me feel sad. I was very angry because how could my own father want to do this to me? I did not expect this from him,” she said.

Despite the trauma, she conveyed that she still loved her father.

“Daddy, I hope you enjoy prison life. I don’t really know what it is like to grow up without a father, which is why I feel sorry for my little sister and brother, but it is your own fault, because how could you.”
