Charity Ngilu Throws Weight Behind Gachagua, Reveals Why She Believes in His Opposition Mission

Former Kitui Governor Charity Ngilu has expressed confidence in former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s commitment to building a united and inclusive political alternative to the Kenya Kwanza government.

Ngilu’s remarks signal growing political engagement among opposition figures seeking to strengthen cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election, which is expected to shape Kenya’s political landscape.

“I am convinced that Rigathi Gachagua is fully committed to building a united and more inclusive alternative to the government we have today,” Ngilu said.

Her statement highlights the importance of unity among opposition leaders as they explore ways to challenge President William Ruto’s administration in the next general election.

Gachagua, who has increasingly positioned himself as a leading opposition figure following his fallout with the president, has been reaching out to political leaders from different regions to strengthen his political network.

The former deputy president has repeatedly criticised the current administration and called for political cooperation among leaders who share concerns about the direction of the country.

Ngilu’s positive assessment could strengthen discussions about the possibility of bringing together experienced politicians and emerging opposition voices under a common political platform.

The former governor has considerable experience in Kenyan politics, having served in various leadership positions, including as a Cabinet minister, Kitui governor and member of parliament.

Her remarks also come at a time when opposition leaders are facing pressure to develop a clear political strategy capable of attracting voters across the country rather than relying on support from individual regions.

A united opposition could provide a stronger challenge to the ruling coalition, particularly if its leaders agree on a common agenda addressing the cost of living, employment, governance and economic opportunities.

However, achieving such unity may require difficult negotiations over leadership positions, presidential ambitions and the distribution of political responsibilities.

Ngilu’s confidence in Gachagua therefore places renewed attention on the former deputy president’s ability to bring together leaders with different political interests.

As the 2027 elections approach, the willingness of opposition figures to cooperate could prove decisive in determining whether they can present a credible alternative to the government.
