BoG Declares War on Illegal Loan Apps, Flags SikaFlow, NhyiraCash and 18 Others
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has flagged 20 loan applications operating without the necessary regulatory authorisation, including SikaFlow, NhyiraCash and Zedvance, warning financial institutions and payment service providers against facilitating transactions linked to the platforms.
The latest development forms part of the central bankβs efforts to sanitise Ghanaβs digital lending industry, protect consumers from potentially exploitative lending practices and prevent unauthorised operators from taking advantage of unsuspecting borrowers.
In its warning, the Bank of Ghana cautioned banks, electronic money issuers and other payment service providers against processing transactions for the identified platforms, stressing that financial institutions must ensure they do not facilitate the activities of unlicensed digital lenders.
The directive is expected to place additional scrutiny on financial transactions associated with the affected applications as regulators intensify efforts to enforce compliance within the country’s financial services sector.
The central bank’s action also raises concerns about the growing activities of digital loan applications, some of which attract customers with promises of quick and convenient access to credit without necessarily meeting the regulatory requirements governing financial operations.
While digital lending has become increasingly popular due to its accessibility and speed, concerns have persisted over the conduct of some operators, particularly regarding transparency, loan recovery practices, interest charges and the protection of customers personal information.
The Bank of Ghana’s intervention is therefore seen as an important step towards ensuring that digital financial services operate within an established regulatory framework.
The central bank is also expected to encourage members of the public to exercise caution when accessing loans through mobile applications, particularly platforms whose licensing status cannot be independently verified.
Consumers have been advised to prioritise authorised financial institutions and properly regulated digital lending services to avoid exposing themselves to unnecessary financial risks.
The warning serves as a reminder that the convenience of obtaining instant loans should not outweigh the need for financial security and consumer protection.
The Bank of Ghana’s latest move underscores its determination to strengthen oversight of the digital lending ecosystem and ensure that only properly authorised operators participate in the country’s financial services industry.
With 20 applications now flagged, attention will turn to how effectively the directive is enforced and whether other unlicensed operators will face similar regulatory action.
