Thierry Henry names Doctor Khumalo as his all-time favourite South African footballer
Former Arsenal and France striker Thierry Henry has revealed that legendary South African footballer Doctor Khumalo was the player who impressed him most during his playing days.
Speaking to SuperSport TV, Henry explained that although he does not currently have a favourite South African player, Khumalo stood out to him because of his exceptional playing style and technical ability.
The French football legend also recalled facing South Africa’s famous 1996 Africa Cup of Nations-winning team, which featured several household names, including Phil Masinga, Mark Fish and Lucas Radebe.
Henry acknowledged that reaching the highest level in football requires years of hard work and consistency, making it difficult for him to single out a current South African player.
However, when reflecting on the players he admired during his career, the former Barcelona and Arsenal forward immediately mentioned Khumalo.
He explained that he particularly enjoyed watching the former Bafana Bafana star because of the way he approached and played the game.
Khumalo remains one of South Africa’s most celebrated footballers, having played a significant role in the country’s historic 1996 AFCON triumph on home soil.
Henry’s comments represent another international recognition of Khumalo’s remarkable talent and the influence he had on football during his playing career.
