The brutal killing of celebrated TV host Regina Re’s mother in Loresho: What we know so far

Regina Wambui Gitau, popularly known as Regina Re, is a former television host who became a familiar face to Kenyan audiences through the game show Who’s Smarter Now?, which she hosted between 1999 and 2006.

The former TV personality has now been thrust into the spotlight following the death of her 86-year-old mother, Dorita Lasinder Macharia, whose body was discovered at her home in Loresho, Nairobi.

Macharia died on Friday evening, October 30, 2026, with police launching investigations into the circumstances surrounding her death.

The case took another turn on Monday, November 2, 2026, when Regina Re and three other relatives were presented in court, where police sought more time to investigate the killing.

Here is what we know so far about the incident.

According to the police, officers at Gigiri Police Station launched investigations after Macharia was found dead at her Loresho residence.

The family’s lawyer, Senior Counsel Philip Murgor, confirmed the death and disclosed that he had visited the house where the 86-year-old’s body was discovered.

Murgor said the family found visible injuries on her body and blood inside the premises.

“I do wish to confirm that a client of mine, Mrs Dorita Macharia, had her life cut short on Friday evening,” he said.

He added, “We were able to go into the house, and we found the body there. She had injuries; there was quite a bit of blood in the premises.”

The lawyer further indicated that the circumstances surrounding her death did not appear natural.

“All we can say, it didn’t look natural,” he said.

Following the discovery, six people connected to the incident were held at Gigiri Police Station as detectives pursued investigations.

Murgor also confirmed that one of the deceased’s sons was among those in custody after he was found at the premises.

However, the lawyer did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding the son’s presence at the home.

Regina Re became a familiar face on Kenyan television through Who’s Smarter Now?, a game show that tested participants’ knowledge and rewarded those who demonstrated their intelligence.

She hosted the programme for seven years, from 1999 to 2006, during which she built recognition among local television audiences.

The former presenter is now among the four relatives being held as detectives investigate her mother’s death.

The circumstances surrounding Macharia’s death remain under investigation, and the four have not been convicted of any offence.
