Thapelo Mokobodi Reaches AmaZulu Star’s Milestone After Impressive Pirates Form

Orlando Pirates midfielder Thapelo Mokobodi continues to attract attention following his impressive start at the Soweto giants, with the former Stellenbosch FC and Marumo Gallants player now drawing level with an AmaZulu star in an important statistical category.

Mokobodi has enjoyed a positive spell since arriving at Parktown from the Cape Winelands, gradually establishing himself as an influential figure in Abdeslam Ouaddou’s midfield.

His performances have demonstrated why Pirates brought him to the club, with his technical ability, passing range and understanding of the game adding another dimension to the Buccaneers’ attacking approach.

The midfielder has also shown that he can perform under pressure, particularly in matches against established opponents.

One of his standout performances came during Saturday’s Soweto Derby against Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium.

Pirates secured a 2-1 victory over their biggest rivals, with Mokobodi playing a decisive role in the result. The midfielder provided assists for Yanela Mbuthuma and Tshepang Moremi, helping the Buccaneers claim all three points in front of a massive crowd.

His contribution was recognised when he received the Man of the Match award after the encounter.

The performance further highlighted his growing influence in Ouaddou’s team, especially considering the importance of the fixture and the pressure that comes with representing Orlando Pirates.

Mokobodi’s journey to the Buccaneers has also been an interesting one.

Before moving to Parktown, he gained experience at Stellenbosch FC and Marumo Gallants. His time at those clubs provided him with valuable exposure to top-flight football and helped prepare him for the demands of playing for one of South Africa’s biggest football institutions.

At Pirates, however, the expectations are considerably higher. Every performance is closely followed by supporters, particularly when a player is competing for a regular place in a squad filled with talented midfielders.

Nevertheless, Mokobodi appears to be responding positively to the challenge.

His ability to connect the midfield with the attacking players has been particularly valuable, while his willingness to make decisive passes has added another weapon to Pirates’ attacking options.

The fact that he has now drawn level with an AmaZulu player in a statistical category also provides another indication of his progress this season.

For Ouaddou, having a midfielder capable of influencing matches through his creativity and movement could prove important as Pirates continue their campaign.

The Buccaneers are targeting consistency across competitions, and performances from players such as Mokobodi could make a significant difference in their pursuit of silverware.

However, maintaining his current level will be the next challenge for the midfielder.

Pirates supporters will hope that his impressive performances continue, especially with important league fixtures ahead.
