BAFANA BAFANA WORRY: Ronwen Williams Fitness Set To Be Assessed Ahead Of Squad Announcement

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA — 2 NOVEMBER 2026

Concerns have emerged over the fitness of Mamelodi Sundowns captain and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, with his physical condition expected to be closely monitored ahead of South Africa’s upcoming international assignments.

Williams remains one of the most influential figures in the national team, but recent fitness concerns have raised questions about his availability as Bafana Bafana prepare for their crucial November fixtures.

The 34-year-old goalkeeper previously missed Sundowns’ CAF Champions League encounter against Wiliete SC after experiencing discomfort during a training session.

His absence attracted attention, particularly because of his importance to both the Tshwane giants and the national team.

However, Sundowns head coach Miguel Cardoso provided a reassuring update, explaining that Williams’ problem was not considered serious at the time.

According to Cardoso, the goalkeeper experienced a minor knock during training, and the technical team decided against risking him in the continental encounter.

The Portuguese coach indicated that the decision was precautionary, with the club keen to prevent a relatively small problem from developing into a more serious injury.

Cardoso also expressed confidence that Williams would recover promptly.

Nevertheless, his condition remains an important consideration as the national team prepares for its next assignment.

Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane will be particularly interested in receiving positive medical feedback, considering Williams’ leadership qualities and experience at international level.

The goalkeeper was included in Mosimane’s preliminary squad announced on 23 October for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixtures against Kenya.

South Africa are scheduled to host Kenya on 13 November at Orlando Stadium before travelling for the return encounter on 17 November.

Williams’ inclusion in the preliminary selection is encouraging, but his physical readiness will remain an important factor as the technical team finalises its plans.

The Sundowns captain has established himself as Bafana Bafana’s first-choice goalkeeper, bringing valuable experience, composure and leadership to the national side.

His possible absence would therefore present Mosimane with an important selection decision, although South Africa have other experienced goalkeeping options available.

Ricardo Goss and Sipho Chaine are among the goalkeepers who could provide alternatives should Williams fail to reach full fitness.

For now, there is no confirmed indication that Williams will miss the upcoming international fixtures.

The focus will be on his recovery and continued assessment as Bafana Bafana prepare for two important matches in their 2027 AFCON qualifying campaign.
