In an interview on Symfoni TV on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Mahdi Shehu, an activist and public affairs analyst, expressed his views on the traditional institution in northern Nigeria, particularly the position of the Emir of Katsina and the possible consequences of removing him.
Shehu discussed the relationship between traditional rulers, political authorities and the people they lead. He stressed the importance of understanding the influence of traditional institutions and the reactions that could follow decisions affecting established traditional leadership.
Speaking during the interview, Shehu stated, “Removing the Emir of Katsina will be the biggest mistake and suicide anybody can commit.” He made the statement while discussing the possible removal of the traditional ruler and the political implications such a decision could generate.
The public affairs analyst suggested that decisions involving traditional institutions should be approached with caution, considering the historical significance and influence of traditional rulers in northern communities. He indicated that removing an emir could generate serious reactions among people who identify with the institution and regard it as an important part of their cultural heritage.
His remarks highlight the continuing debate surrounding the relationship between government authorities and traditional institutions in northern Nigeria, where traditional rulers continue to occupy important positions in community affairs.
He concluded that authorities should carefully consider the possible consequences of decisions affecting traditional leadership, particularly when such decisions involve institutions with deep historical and cultural significance to the people.
