Ramaphosa Says Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi Has Been Put Forward For The Job of Hawks Head
President Cyril Ramaphosa has confirmed that KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is among the candidates being considered for the position of head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks.
Ramaphosa made the clarification while addressing reports suggesting that Mkhwanazi had declined an opportunity to take up the senior law enforcement position.
The President indicated that Mkhwanazi’s name had been submitted to Cabinet for consideration as part of the selection process. He said Cabinet would deliberate on the candidates before a final decision was made.
Ramaphosa added that an official announcement would follow once Cabinet had completed its discussions and agreed on who should lead the specialised police unit.
The development comes amid continued public interest in the leadership of the Hawks and Mkhwanazi’s possible move from his current position as KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner.
Mkhwanazi has attracted significant attention through his involvement in high-profile policing matters, particularly allegations of corruption and criminal networks within law enforcement that have featured in recent investigations.
However, Ramaphosa’s confirmation does not mean that Mkhwanazi has been appointed, as the final decision remains subject to Cabinet’s deliberations.
The Presidency is expected to announce the successful candidate once the selection process has been concluded.
