Ofankor–Neoplan Road Shows Early Signs Of Change After New Traffic Rules Take Effect

A video recorded along the Ofankor–Neoplan stretch has offered a glimpse of how motorists may be responding to Ghana’s newly introduced digital traffic enforcement system.

The early-morning footage shows drivers moving along the road while observing the prescribed speed limits, a development that has attracted attention following the commencement of the TraffiTech-GH programme.

The motorist who shared the video expressed satisfaction with what he described as a noticeable improvement in driving behaviour. He said he was encouraged by the sight of motorists keeping their speeds under control and expressed hope that the change would continue.

According to him, sustained compliance with traffic regulations could help reduce road crashes and make travelling safer for motorists and other road users.

The observation comes just days after the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service officially commenced the implementation of TraffiTech-GH on November 1, 2026.

The system uses cameras and other digital devices to detect traffic offences, with speeding forming a major focus of the initial enforcement phase. Cameras mounted in police vehicles and on tripods capture suspected violations, which are reviewed by the MTTD before electronic notices are sent to the registered owners of affected vehicles.

Under the initial speed enforcement guidelines, motorists are expected to observe a maximum of 50 kilometres per hour in towns, 90 kilometres per hour on highways and 100 kilometres per hour on motorways.

Vehicle owners who receive electronic violation notices have 14 days to pay the prescribed fines or challenge the alleged offences through the approved process.

The introduction of the system is intended to improve compliance with road traffic regulations and reduce crashes, injuries and deaths associated with dangerous driving.

Although the footage from Ofankor–Neoplan does not establish a nationwide change in motorists’ behaviour, it has provided an encouraging example for those hoping the new enforcement measures will promote safer driving.

The bigger test will be whether motorists maintain the same discipline beyond the initial days of the rollout, particularly when enforcement cameras are not immediately visible.
