Mzansi Reacts as Jacob Zuma Makes Unexpected Announcement About Foreign Nationals

Former South African President Jacob Zuma has sparked political debate after addressing foreign nationals, land ownership and the rights of black South Africans during a packed MK Party rally on Saturday.

Speaking to thousands of supporters, Zuma made it clear that the MK Party does not intend to force foreign nationals who have lived in South Africa for many years to leave the country.

He reportedly assured the crowd that the party would not chase them away because they had already established their lives within South Africa. However, Zuma also emphasised that black South Africans have historical and ancestral rights to the land, pointing out that they never travelled overseas to colonise other people’s territories.

MK Party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela supported Zuma’s remarks, explaining that the party’s position was based on human dignity rather than xenophobia. However, the party had not released a formal written policy explaining its position on immigration. Opposition parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA), called for further clarification about which foreign nationals would be covered by the proposed approach.

Zuma’s comments come amid growing tensions in several Gauteng townships, where local residents and foreign-owned spaza shops have reportedly clashed over trading permits and allegations of unfair competition.

Communities in areas such as Tembisa and Katlehong have also called on the government to introduce stricter regulations, arguing that non-citizens are gaining an advantage in informal businesses.

During the rally, some supporters became emotional when Zuma spoke about the historical dispossession of black South Africans. One woman wearing an MK Party beret was reportedly seen crying while holding a placard reading “Mzansi First”.

His remarks have raised questions about how the MK Party would balance the protection of established foreign nationals with the frustrations of local communities.

It remains unclear whether the party would introduce specific residency protections or new legislation if it eventually comes into power.
