More Than 90 Families Evacuated as Nairobi Orders Residents Out of Apartment Building
More than 90 families have been displaced after the Nairobi City County Government ordered the immediate evacuation, of a 10-storey apartment building along Kabiria Road in Riruta Ward over safety concerns.
The evacuation followed an inspection that reportedly revealed serious structural defects, raising fears that the building could pose a danger to residents.
Occupants said county officials declared the apartment unsafe for habitation after identifying extensive cracks on the structure. They were consequently directed to leave the premises to avoid possible harm.
The order left about 90 families searching for alternative accommodation, with some tenants forced to leave behind personal belongings as they rushed to comply.
Several occupants said they were caught by surprise by the sudden directive, explaining that they had little time to organise their belongings before being asked to vacate.
The evacuation was reportedly conducted under police supervision as authorities secured the premises and ensured residents moved out of the building.
For families living in the apartment, the order has created an unexpected disruption, with some having to make urgent arrangements for where to stay after losing access to their homes.
Tenants who left their belongings behind also face uncertainty over when they will be allowed to return to collect their property.
The county government’s decision came after inspectors raised concerns about the condition of the 10-storey structure, particularly the extensive cracks that were considered a threat to the safety of those living inside.
The incident has once again drawn attention to the importance of proper building inspections and enforcement of safety standards in Nairobi, where many families depend on apartment blocks for housing.
Residents affected by the order now have to seek alternative accommodation as the building remains off-limits pending further safety measures.
