“Mahama Has No Interest in a Third Term” — Felix Kwakye Ofosu Dismisses NPP’s Claims

Minister of Government Communications Felix Kwakye Ofosu has dismissed claims by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that President John Dramani Mahama is considering pursuing a third term in office, describing the allegations as misleading and unnecessary.

According to a report by TV3 Ghana on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the minister questioned why the opposition party continued to raise the issue despite repeated statements from the President regarding his position on the matter.

Kwakye Ofosu maintained that Mahama has consistently made it clear that he has no intention of remaining in office beyond the constitutionally permitted period. He argued that the President’s position should be accepted rather than allowing speculation about a possible third term to dominate political discussions.

The minister also criticised what he described as the NPP’s attempt to create fear and uncertainty among Ghanaians. He suggested that the opposition should concentrate on pressing national issues instead of repeatedly raising concerns about an extension of the President’s tenure.

According to him, the government does not see any justification for the continued discussion of a third-term ambition when Mahama has already addressed the matter publicly.

The issue has generated conversations within Ghana’s political environment, particularly as both the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the opposition NPP continue to exchange views about the country’s political direction and constitutional arrangements.

The debate has also brought renewed attention to presidential term limits, which remain an important part of Ghana’s democratic system. The country’s Constitution limits a person to two terms as President, with each term lasting four years.

Kwakye Ofosu’s latest comments reaffirm the government’s position that Mahama does not intend to seek another term beyond the constitutional limit.

However, the disagreement between the two political parties may continue to attract public attention, especially as political discussions surrounding the President’s tenure remain part of the national conversation.
