KDF Soldier Shot Dead : The Deadly Midnight Ruiru Shootout That Ended a Serviceman’s Life
Residents of Kahawa Sukari are in total shock following a deadly midnight shootout that left a 33-year-old Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) soldier dead.
The tragic incident, which has fast gone viral on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter), occurred at the Covo area near Magunas Supermarket. The deceased serviceman has been identified as Antony Munene Fredrick, a native of Meru County.
According to an official police report, officers from the Kahawa Sukari Police Station were conducting a routine night patrol around 01:00 AM when they were flagged down by an alarmed member of the public. The resident reported that two armed individuals were actively terrorizing and threatening locals in the neighborhood.
The patrol team immediately pursued the two suspects and cornered them, ordering them to surrender peacefully. However, instead of raising his hands, one of the men pulled out a weapon and opened fire twice directly at the police officers, prompting them to retaliate with lethal force.
During the fierce exchange of gunfire, Munene was shot in the chest and his right hand. He was rushed to the nearby Ruiru Level IV Hospital in critical condition but unfortunately succumbed to his gunshot wounds while undergoing emergency treatment.
At the scene, crime investigators recovered a Jericho pistol loaded with 12 rounds of live ammunition, alongside two spent cartridges. It was only after a body search was conducted on the fallen suspect that officers recovered a KDF Identity Card, confirming his elite military status.
As the body of the deceased was moved to the General Kago Mortuary in Thika for an autopsy, the incident ignited massive social media debates among Kenyans.
A section of online commentators has raised eyebrows regarding the weapon found at the scene, with some claiming on platforms like Facebook that Jericho pistols are not standard-issue weapons for KDF soldiers.
Netizens are now calling for a transparent, multi-agency investigation to unearth what the soldier was doing out during the late-night hours and the exact circumstances that triggered the fatal confrontation.
