Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma Questions Government’s Defence of Foreign-Owned Spaza Shops

The debate over foreign-owned spaza shops in South Africa continues to expose deep disagreements about immigration, business regulation and the government’s responsibility to enforce trading laws.

Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma has added her voice to the discussion, questioning the government’s approach to protecting businesses operated by foreign nationals.

In her statement, she specifically referred to shops owned by Pakistani, Somali, Nigerian and Ethiopian nationals, arguing that the government should not present these businesses as representative of the wider South African economy.

She also criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa’s reported decision to deploy members of the South African National Defence Force around a business event.

According to her position, government attention should be directed towards addressing alleged illegal activities and ensuring that businesses comply with the law.

Her remarks come amid continuing public disagreements about undocumented immigration, informal trading and the regulation of spaza shops.

For many communities, local shops are an important part of everyday economic life. They provide convenient access to basic household goods and create opportunities for small business owners.

However, concerns about compliance, food safety, business registration and alleged criminal activities have also made the sector a subject of public scrutiny.

The challenge for government is to enforce regulations fairly without treating people differently simply because of their nationality.

A foreign-owned business is not automatically an illegal business. Equally, local ownership does not guarantee that a business complies with every applicable regulation.

Authorities must investigate specific violations and take appropriate action based on evidence rather than generalisations about entire national groups.

Ngobese-Zuma’s criticism highlights the frustration surrounding the government’s handling of the issue and the demand for clearer action.

She concluded her message by encouraging South Africans to consider the country’s future when choosing their political representatives, ending with the words, “VOTE WISELY.”
