Former Ghana international Inaki Williams continued his impressive record against Real Sociedad after finding the net in Athletic Bilbao’s 2-1 victory in the Basque derby in La Liga on Sunday.

The Bilbao captain opened the scoring at the Estadio San Mames after just 14 minutes, finishing off an excellent assist from his younger brother Nico Williams to give the hosts an early advantage.

However, Sociedad responded in the 30th minute when Croatian midfielder Luka Sucic found the back of the net to restore parity and put the visitors back into the contest.

Bilbao regained the lead at the brink of half-time after winger Alex Berenguer confidently converted a penalty to hand the home side a crucial advantage.

The victory was another memorable occasion for Inaki, who has developed a remarkable goalscoring record against Bilbao’s fierce regional rivals.

The 32-year-old has now scored eight goals in 25 appearances against Sociedad in Basque derbies, making them the opposition he has scored against most during his career.

His latest strike also takes him to second place on the list of the highest goalscorers in Basque derbies in the 21st century.

Sociedad forward Mikel Oyarzabal leads the ranking with nine goals, while Inaki follows closely with eight. Former Sociedad striker Nihat is third with seven goals.

Former Bilbao captain Iker Muniain occupies fourth position with six goals, while legendary forward Aritz Aduriz and Tiko have five goals each.

Inaki has also made a positive contribution to Athletic Bilbao’s campaign this season, registering two goals and two assists in 11 La Liga appearances.
