“He (Festus Osifo) Is An Absentee President Of The TUC, He Doesn’t Live In Nigeria–Ajaero

According to a report by Daily Post on Monday, November 2, 2026, Ajaero made the allegation during an appearance on Channels Television’s programme, The Morning Brief, where he questioned Osifo’s commitment to leading the TUC.

Joe Ajaero, President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has criticised his counterpart at the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Festus Osifo, accusing him of being unavailable to effectively discharge his responsibilities as the leader of the organisation.

The NLC president alleged that Osifo does not ordinarily reside in Nigeria, claiming that he is based in the United States and only returns to the country when important labour meetings require his attendance.

Ajaero further suggested that Osifo usually travels back abroad shortly after participating in such meetings, raising concerns about his availability and involvement in the daily affairs of the union.

He argued that occupying the position of a labour organisation’s president requires regular physical presence in the country to coordinate activities, engage relevant stakeholders and respond to issues affecting Nigerian workers.

The NLC leader maintained that Osifo’s alleged absence from Nigeria was inconsistent with the demands of his position, considering the responsibilities associated with leading a major labour organisation.

Speaking during the interview, Ajaero stated: “He (Festus Osifo) is an absentee president of the TUC. He doesn’t live in Nigeria. He comes in from the United States to attend meetings and rush back,” Ajaero declared.

His comments have generated fresh attention to the relationship between the leadership of the NLC and the TUC, two of Nigeria’s major labour organisations.

Both unions play important roles in representing workers, defending their interests and engaging the government and other stakeholders on employment conditions, wages and other labour-related matters.
