Ghana And Russia Seal Nuclear Power Deal To Build 2,000MW Power Plant

Ghana and Russia have reached an agreement on plans to develop a 2,000-megawatt nuclear power plant in Ghana as the country explores ways to expand its electricity generation capacity and improve long-term energy security.

According to a report by GHOne TV on Sunday, November 1, 2026, the proposed project forms part of Ghana’s efforts to diversify its energy sources and reduce reliance on traditional methods of power generation.

The planned facility is expected to contribute significantly to meeting the country’s growing electricity needs, particularly as demand continues to rise among households, businesses and industries.

The agreement also represents an expansion of cooperation between Ghana and Russia in the areas of energy, infrastructure and technology. Russia’s experience in nuclear power development is expected to be important in providing technical knowledge and support for the proposed facility.

If completed and connected to the national grid, the 2,000-megawatt plant could strengthen Ghana’s electricity supply, support industrial activities and improve the country’s ability to meet future energy demands.

The project could also generate employment opportunities during construction and subsequent operations, while contributing to Ghana’s long-term plans to establish a more diversified electricity system.

However, developing a nuclear power facility involves several technical and regulatory requirements. The project will require substantial investment, detailed assessments, regulatory approval and strict safety arrangements before construction can begin.

Ghana will also need adequate technical expertise, effective regulatory institutions and proper systems for handling nuclear materials and managing radioactive waste.

Following the agreement, attention is expected to shift towards the practical arrangements for implementing the project, including financing, technical evaluations, safety requirements and the construction schedule.

The proposed partnership could mark an important development in Ghana’s nuclear energy programme as the country continues to explore additional ways of securing a reliable electricity supply.
