“Gachagua’s Arrogance and Pride is Going to Split the Opposition” Fred Matiang’i Publicly Claims

Fresh cracks could be emerging within Kenya’s opposition camp as former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i raises concerns about the leadership style and political approach of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. His latest remarks have sparked debate over whether personal ambitions could undermine the opposition’s efforts to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.

Matiang’i reportedly accused Gachagua of allowing arrogance and pride to dominate his political engagements, warning that such an approach could eventually create divisions among leaders who should be working together towards a common goal.

According to Matiang’i, the country’s leadership and political future should not be determined through ethnic divisions or the creation of regional political territories. Instead, he believes political competition should revolve around ideas, policies, competence and proven leadership records.

He further questioned whether the opposition was genuinely committed to offering Kenyans an alternative based on performance and qualifications rather than ethnic influence and individual political interests.

The former CS’s remarks come at a time when opposition leaders are facing growing pressure to establish a united political front ahead of the next general election.

Gachagua has positioned himself as an influential figure in the anti-Ruto political movement, particularly in the Mount Kenya region. However, Matiang’i’s intervention raises questions about whether his leadership approach can accommodate other ambitious politicians within the opposition.

With 2027 approaching, the opposition faces a major test of unity, strategy and leadership.

Whether Gachagua responds to Matiang’i’s criticism remains to be seen, but the emerging debate could expose deeper disagreements over who should lead the campaign to challenge Ruto.
