FNB Stadium Management Awaits Report After More Than 6,000 Fans Were Denied Entry
Stadium Management South Africa director Bertie Grobbelaar has revealed that the organisation is awaiting detailed reports to establish why more than 6,000 football supporters were unable to enter FNB Stadium during the recent Soweto Derby.
According to Grobbelaar, the stadium had already reached a significant attendance figure when the gates were eventually closed, leaving thousands of supporters outside the venue. The situation raised concerns about crowd management, security arrangements and the process used to control access to the stadium.
Speaking exclusively to KickOff, Grobbelaar explained that the organisation expected to receive feedback on the incident on Monday. He said the reports would help them understand what happened and identify the challenges that led to so many people remaining outside.
“We will get all of the feedback today [Monday]. The gates were closed with 88,000 people inside the venue, and we still had about 6,000 on the outside,” Grobbelaar told KickOff.
His explanation suggests that the stadium had already accommodated a large crowd before access was stopped. However, the number of supporters who remained outside has raised questions about how the situation was handled and whether more could have been done to prevent the problem.
Grobbelaar also confirmed that there were incidents involving damage to property outside the stadium. He made it clear that some of the problems occurred beyond the stadium’s internal areas, where supporters were still attempting to gain access.
“They damaged our property, but they were outside; on the outside we had a lot of issues,” he added.
The incident has brought attention to the challenges associated with managing large football crowds, particularly during high-profile matches such as the Soweto Derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. Such fixtures attract thousands of supporters and require careful planning to ensure that everyone can enter safely.
The reports expected by Stadium Management South Africa could provide further clarity on the circumstances surrounding the incident. They may also help the organisation understand where difficulties arose and what measures could be considered to prevent a similar situation at future matches.
For now, supporters will be waiting for a fuller explanation of why thousands of people were left outside despite having travelled to the stadium for one of South African football’s biggest matches.
